Kanchanben Patel has been there to greet residents and customers at the Arbor Motel Inn in Wrentham for as long as anyone at the can remember. She always appeared with fresh linens, and a smile, but not today. The housekeeper dragged more than three miles to her death along Route 1 Monday night.

It's really, really sad. I had no idea," said Mary Mealey who lives at the Inn.

Police discovered her body just south of Patriot Place by Foxboro restaurant Chickie Flynn's. Patel, 58, suffered "traumatic" injuries according to the Norfolk County District Attorney.

Witnesses back at the motel told police the driver of a pickup truck struck Patel and another man, later identified as her husband, then took off. The woman was dragged underneath from Wrentham to Foxboro. Her husband suffered only minor injuries.

"But if you're in a car, or even a pick–up truck, you've got to be able to feel something like that," said Mealey who couldn't understand how this could happen.

Two individuals were located in the truck and questioned by local and state police over night. By morning a 22–year–old Norwood man was in custody charged with leaving the scene of the accident that caused Patel's death. Moses Aloque faced a judge in Wrentham District Court Tuesday morning.

"I'd like to know what the guy's problem is. There's no need for that," said another Inn resident.

The Patel's had recently both become American Citizens. Friends are remembering Kanchanben as a kind woman who didn't deserve the fate she got.
