CENTRAL FALLS, RI- A fundraiser to help pay the legal fees for the man accused of killing his 10–year–old daughter has been canceled.
Family members of Jorge DePina planned the event. The flyer created for Friday's fundraiser has a picture of DePina hugging his daughter, Aleida.
The girl died after being severely beaten, back in July.
DePina has been charged with murder and child abuse.
Tonight's fundraiser was supposed place at Tropical Restaurant in Central Falls, but the owner canceled the event after learning it was to raise funds for DePina's legal fees.
Members of the Cape Verdean– American community also planned a sit–in at the restaurant. They say the fundraiser was inappropriate.
"If you ever see anyone that is in the same situation that Aleida was in, that you would step up and help; that you're not gonna say, ‘oh this has nothing do with me, or it's a father and a daughter or a mother and a son or whatever,' that you're gonna step up and say this is wrong and I'm not gonna let another Aleida happen," said sit-in organizer, Miyram Mendes.
The restaurant owner says he canceled the event for public safety and because he didn't want any involvement.
