NEWPORT, RI- For nearly 20 years, an edible home has been the focal point of the Newport Marriott hotel lobby for the holidays.

It's about six hundred pounds of gingerbread, 700 pounds of icing, thousands of candy varieties and cookies, and that's not including the heavy wood frame that holds it together.

"Yeah it's a lot," said executive chef, Eric Steinhauer.

It may be a lot for the few who spend two weeks baking, icing, and sticking all the parts together, but they do it for a bigger cause.

"We encourage the kids to bring a non–perishable food good that we can distribute out to the local food banks," said Steinhauer.

The gingerbread structure attracts thousands to Newport every year. For those who've seen the various designs over the years, it still brings back special memories."

"My mother in–law had come up and she walked in and took a piece like Hansel and Gretel and broke it off and ate it," said Maureen Aboyoun.

Holly Delorme said, "When my kids were little they came here and played in the lobby. I said lets just go take a walk and see if the gingerbread house is up. It's like one of those things I had to do with the holidays here."
