PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) The family of a mentally ill man shot nine times by North Kingstown police has agreed to settle a lawsuit against the town and police officers for $7 million.

Mark Kilcline was shot in February 2009. The officers said at the time that Kilcline was threatening them with a knife. But a lawsuit filed by Kilcline's family says he was getting dressed to be taken to a psychiatric hospital when police burst into his bedroom without consent, barricaded him inside and shot him.

Kilcline was shot in the face, chest, abdomen, and arm and was paralyzed. He died this year, and the lawsuit says his death was a result of the shooting.

His lawyers filed papers in federal court last week alerting it of the proposed settlement.
