The state fire marshal's office is investigating the cause of a blaze that destroyed the historic First Congregational Church of Pomfret.

The church that dates back to 1715 went up in flames Saturday afternoon. The church steeple collapsed into the rest of the building during the blaze, but no one was hurt.

Pomfret Fire Chief Derek May says the church appeared to be unoccupied when the fire began. He says it appears the fire started on the first floor, but the cause isn't clear.

Congregation members gathered at a local school Sunday for services.

The church's pastor, the Rev. Thomas Crumb, says the historic building is irreplaceable. But he says it's only a building and he's glad no one was injured.
