Overnight snow turned to freezing rain Monday morning making for a messy commute. There wasn't much accumulation on the roadways, but what was there quickly turned to slush and then ice. Drivers powered through, but there were several accidents and spin outs along the highways.
This marks the first time this season that a winter-like mix had such a serious impact on the roadways. Drivers were urged to use caution and reduce speeds.
RI DOT crews were seen treating the highways with sand and salt over night into early morning. The back roads also saw a dusting. They are typically the last to see DPW crews.
There were no reported power outages, school cancellations, or delays in our area. Only one flight from TF Green was canceled. It was bound for Philadelphia.
