WARWICK - After more than 40 years a local pharmacist is hanging up his white lab coat and selling his business.
Owner and head pharmacist David Feeney first started working at the Oxnard Pharmacy in Warwick when he was fresh out of school.
Since then, he's made a deep connection with his customers and even garnered some national attention.
The pharmacy was featured on the ABC show According to Jim. Feeney's son used to write for the show.
"One of the episodes he created was Jim running a marathon... so he came up with Feeney Shoes, and Oxnard Pharmacy," he said with a smile.
Feeney may have been immortalized in TV–land, but for most local customers, he's been a staple at the pharmacy since 1971.
"We've had people come here and tell me that I've taken care of 5 generations of their family which... kind of surprised me because... I'm not that old!" Feeney said, laughing.
Old enough... At least to retire.
Feeney says he's ready for a break, but his customers aren't... like Evelyn Jacobson, who travels from East Greenwich, just to come to Oxnard's.
"Because I love the staff and the people and they go out of their way to make sure that they do their job," Jacobson said.
That same staff will continue to work, even once the store is turned into a CVS on Monday.
"They were the only company that would say they would guarantee jobs for all the employees... and that was huge," said Feeney.
Important both to Feeney... and to his clients... who have grown accustom to the pharmacy the way it is.
"This is like home," said longtime customer Mary Manson. "I mean this is really sad, very very sad. I cried this morning! That's right, I did!"
Feeney says he'll stay involved in Rhode Island pharmacy, spend some time traveling, visiting his kids and grand-kids, and playing lots of golf.
