A U.S. marine from Fairhaven was killed in action in Afghanistan on Wednesday.

"He loved what he was doing and loved fighting for people he loved and he knew he was doing the right thing," said Adam Rodriguez, brother.

Adam Rodriguez is proud of his brother's service to our country.  He says he is going to miss his best friend.

"He was one of my best friends, one of my heroes.  He was always smiling, he knew what to say, he knew how to cheer me up," said Rodriguez.

19-year-old Lance Cpl. Matthew Rodriguez of Fairhaven Massachusetts was killed while conducting combat operations in Helmand Province.

Rodriguez was assigned to the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

He enlisted in August of 2012.  His awards include the National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and NATO Medal-ISAF Afghanistan.

Rodriguez graduated from New Bedford Vocational Technical High School in 2012 where he studied plumbing.

"My prayers go out to his family, everybody that was touched by him and couldn't be more proud of him.  It was a great service," said Sam Dembrs, New Bedford Voc Tech student.

Rodriguez leaves behind his parents, brother and Fiancee.  His family is traveling to Delaware to bring home his body.
