A Westport man faces charges after stealing copper piping from a house in Fairhaven.
Fairhaven Police found 25-year-old William Lewis walking in the area of Sconticut Neck Road Wednesday afternoon carrying a backpack and large duffle bag.
When the officer stopped him, he found that Lewis threw the duffle bag 100 yards away. Lewis claimed at first that he was working on a house in the area and had his tools in the bags.
Officers tracked Lewis' footprints in the snow to a Sconticut Neck Road house that had been broken into and its pipes cut and removed.
Officers then found the copper piping in the bags Lewis was carrying and matched them to the pipes remaining in the house.
Lewis was arrested and charged with breaking and entering in the daytime to commit a felony, possession of burglarious instruments, vandalism and larceny from a building. He was arraigned Thursday morning.
