The body of a Fairhaven marine killed in action returned home Thursday afternoon.

Hundreds lined the streets of Fairhaven as the body of Lance Corporal Matthew Rodriguez was brought from the airport to the funeral home.

People from town held flags to honor the fallen marine.

"We've lost enough boys out there.  I just want the family to know there
sacrifice was not in vain," Sheryl Geovdz, Fairhaven.

"Awful to loose a young kid like this very valuable to
the this community," Bryan Medeiros, Fairhaven.

19-year-old Lance Cpl. Matthew Rodriguez of Fairhaven Massachusetts was killed while conducting combat operations in Helmand Province.

Rodriguez was assigned to the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

He enlisted in August of 2012.  His awards include the National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and NATO Medal-ISAF Afghanistan.

Family friend Mike Knabbe says Lance Clp. Rodriguez was always smiling.

"He got in trouble on Parris Island because he would
smile at the drill sergeant, so that's what we remember today about Matthew he
was one if the kindest young man you'd ever want to meet," Knabbe.

Rodriguez graduated from New Bedford Vocational Technical High School in 2012 where he studied plumbing.
