Shelters across Rhode Island are getting a donation to make sure the homeless are staying warm through the winter.

Rhode Island Council 94 collected more than 200 coats, scarves and hats as part of a month long "Have A Heart" drive.

The shelters are picking up the items just in time for the holidays and cold temperatures.

"It feels good to know that when you ask people to come together and help those that are less fortunate then we are the response is overwhelming," says Lynn Loveday.

The union is calling on the governor and the general assembly to support efforts to fight homelessness funding a rental voucher program to help keep people off the streets.
