CRANSTON - People in Cranston got a rude awakening this morning. Many reported hearing a loud sound that startled them sometime between 7 and 8am this morning. Some even saying they felt it too.
"The whole house shook and I didn't know what it was. I looked around, full electricity... everything was fine," said Alicia Cook, who has been living on the North side for over 4 years.
She wasn't the only one. Just around the corner members at Saint Mary's Church had a similar experience.
"I was just getting ready to leave to go to church for the 8 o clock mass and I heard this big bang noise... I looked out I thought maybe a truck banged something or whatever... but I couldn't see anything," said Deacon Peter Soprano.
That was just one of the areas where people say they heard the sound. All across the city people heard similar noises, and there are several theories as to what it might have been.
" [Maybe] An explosion," guessed Soprano.
"With all the construction going on maybe something with the construction... maybe a pipe broke. I have no clue," said Cook.
Others on social media shared their theory that the sound may have to do with gas buildup at the landfill.
Officers are investigating and so far have ruled out an explosion from the demolition of the former Cranston police department, and blasting at the quarry.
Colonel Marco Palombo said the PD had one report of a house alarm this morning but other than that, no calls into the station reporting the sound.
And on FaceBook, the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation wrote that nothing happened on their property in Johnston.
Regardless of what caused it, those who experienced it say it's not something they'll quickly forget.
"It made you stand up straight and go... wait what just happened?" said Cook.
