Area hospitals welcome the first babies of the New Year

Hospitals throughout Rhode Island and Massachusetts are welcoming "baby New Year" into the world.

Rhode Island's first baby of the New Year is a boy who was born at 12:10 a.m. at Women and Infants Hospital. The parents, according to the hospital, are both students at Brown University.

In Massachusetts, Southcoast Hospitals say their first baby of the New Year was born at 1:54 a.m. at Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River. The baby girl weighing 7 pounds, 1 ounces was named Evan by her parents Cindy and Joseph Stephens.

St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford welcomed its first baby at 8:37 a.m. The baby was a boy weighing 7 pounds, 1 ounce. His parents Yelitza Rivera and Ian Aresta named him Dominic.
