Cranston's Police Chief is off the job. Colonel Marco Palombo has been placed on paid leave.

The move comes one day after Mayor Allan Fung agreed to bring in the state police to look into possible shenanigans involving parking tickets in the city.  The state police are now looking into whether Cranston police officers handed out close to 130 parking tickets in the wards of two city councilors. Those councilors voted against a proposed police contract in November.

Palmobo has been temporarily replaced by 19 year Rhode Island State Police Veteran Captain Kevin Barry. He has led the department's terrorism task force and specializes in narcotics.

Mayor Fung wouldn't comment why exactly Chief Palombo was placed on leave, but says his main objective is to make sure the people of Cranston are being protected by the right people.

This isn't the first time the Rhode Island State Police have sent their guys in to take over a local police department. It's happened in North Providence, East Providence and Woonsocket in the last few years.
