Driver injured after crashing into Westerly store

A man has been taken to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries after crashing his van into a building early this morning. It happened in Westerly around 12:20 a.m. at a WalMart on Post Road.

The driver has been identified as 18-year-old Thomas Brightman of Charlestown. Rescue crews had to extricate Brightman from the van.

The store had to be evacuated for 45 minutes unitl Town of Westerly building officials deemed it safe to reopen.

Police say there is heavy damage on the inside and outside of the facility as well as to the car. Witnesses told authorities the man was driving erratically before the accident.

The cause is under investigation.
