The Rhode Island Bridge and Turnpike Authority (RIBTA) will install delineators on the Newport Pell Bridge in an attempt to cut down on car crashes and distracted driving on the bridge.
The delineators are plastic yellow devices with reflectors that aim to alert drivers when they are at risk of crossing into the opposite lane. The installation will begin in about two weeks with the project costing an estimated $70,000. The RIBTA says this is just a first step to curve accidents and if it is not successful they will look at installing a concrete median on the bridge.
In addition the RIBTA says they will begin to issue warnings in the mail to drivers that are caught on the bridges cameras speeding or texting while driving.
On Christmas eve there was a deadly crash on the bridge caused after one driver swerved into the wrong lane.
