CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) _ The highest-ranking woman in the history of the Cranston Police Department has filed a lawsuit in state court accusing the city and some of her colleagues of sexual harassment and gender discrimination.

The Providence Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1ipLNYk ) that Lt. Karen Guilbeault alleges her gender played roles in her promotion to lieutenant being delayed, her being denied sufficient personnel while leading the traffic unit and her being denied training.

Guilbeault also says she was subjected to harassing text messages.

The defendants have filed a response in Superior Court denying the allegations. They include the city, police chief and five current or former colleagues of Guilbeault.

Guilbeault alleges the five officers treated her maliciously with a ``reckless and callous indifference'' to her right to work in a discrimination-free environment.
