Former Providence mayor Buddy Cianci has been diagnosed with cancer. He's been off the air at ABC6 for more than a week, getting treatment at Miriam Hospital. Buddy has already had his first round of Chemo. He went home Monday night.
Many of us at ABC 6 have worked alongside Buddy for years and know there is no obstacle he can't overcome. Whether it be as the longest serving Mayor of Providence, or now with cancer, his closest friends say this is just another battle Buddy will win.
He's the man of Rhode Island. The face that any native knows. The former Mayor of Providence and ABC 6 political analyst Buddy Cianci, is known for telling the political news of the day. But his voice has been silent the past week as his battle with Cancer becomes public.
Cianci's close friend and former mayor of Providence, Joe Paolino, says Buddy came home Monday night and is doing well after his first round of Chemo at Miriam hospital.
"The key is that this thing is curable and that's important," said Paolino.
He says it's a miracle doctors caught the cancer during a recent CT scan.
"It's unbelievable, I mean he dodged a big bullet, and he got there early and he's excited to get his treatments, get it behind him and he's looking forward to a very busy summer and fall," Paolino said.
Buddy has 7 more rounds of treatment and plans to be back at ABC 6 for his "World According to Buddy" segment in one week.
Paolino isn't worried, the Buddy he knows, is a fighter.
He said, "When a doctor says to you, you have cancer, you know everything goes through your mind. But he's a fighter, he's a believer, and he has faith. This is no eulogy, and this is no last hoorah. I can tell you that he's got a very positive outlook and I think were going to be seeing a lot of Mayor Cianci during 2014."
