Rhode Island House Speaker Gordon Fox has agreed to pay a $1,500 civil fine for violating state disclosure rules by not reporting income from legal work he did for a Providence economic development agency.
The state ethics commission agreed to a settlement with Fox on Tuesday. It resolves an ethics complaint that accused the Providence Democrat of violating financial disclosure rules by not reporting money he made handling loan closings for the Providence Economic Development Partnership.
As part of the settlement, Fox agrees to amend his financial disclosure statements to include income he earned from the agency between 2007 and 2009.
Fox is required to report income from governmental sources annually. His lawyer had argued that he didn't need to disclose the income because he was working as a subcontractor.
