PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) Prosecutors say a former guard at a Rhode Island prison has been sentenced to probation and ordered to pay $42,000 for using fake pay stubs to get government assistance.
Attorney General Peter Kilmartin announced Wednesday that Rosemary Hernandez pleaded no contest to a charge of welfare fraud and another charge of filing a false document.
Authorities say the 31-year-old Providence woman submitted fraudulent payment records to receive $39,000 in childcare assistance. Hernandez was a guard at the Adult Correctional Institutions at the time.
Hernandez was sentenced to five years of probation and was ordered to pay $39,000 in restitution and a $3,000 fine.
A phone number for Hernandez could not be found Wednesday.
