Posted: Updated:

SOCHI, Russia (AP) - Russia's backup pair of Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov won the team free skate Saturday night, giving the host nation a huge lead in the new event at the Sochi Olympics.

With world champions Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov sitting it out after winning the short program, Stolbova and Klimov stepped in superbly. Their countrymen in the Iceberg were on their feet well before they finished their routine.

With 47 points, Russia leads Canada by six heading into Sunday's men's and women's free skates and the free dance.  The United States is third with 34 after Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir finished fourth among the five countries that advanced to the free skate.

Italy has 31 points and Japan 30.
