Rhode Island transportation officials say their road salt supplies are strained and are warning drivers to expect difficult travel conditions through the Monday morning commute.

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation says it is applying sand for traction on roadways that were left covered with snow and ice because of limited salt use to conserve the state's supply.

It says that travelers should drive at reduced speeds especially on untreated surfaces. RIDOT warns that roads will likely refreeze Sunday night and that black ice is likely due to snow melt freezing. The agency says it has been working with the state Emergency Management Agency to monitor salt supplies.

The National Weather Service says between 3 and 8 inches of snow fell across the state.
