3 chefs in RI named James Beard semi-finalists

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Three chefs in Rhode Island have been named semi-finalists for prestigious James Beard Foundation awards in the regional "Best Chef'' category.

The foundation announced Wednesday that Matt Jennings of Farmstead in Providence, Benjamin Sukle of Birch in Providence and Champe Speidel of Persimmon in Bristol are in the running for best chef in the Northeast. Seventeen others were nominated in the region, including the chefs at Coppa and Flour Bakery and Cafe in Boston, Lumiere in Newton and Hungry Mother in Cambridge.

Persimmon is also in the running for "Outstanding Service.''

The finalists will be announced on March 19. Winners will be honored in May.
