A plan to thin out the deer population on Block Island has been put off until next year.

The company hired to kill the deer asked the DEM to postpone the hunt until the 2014-2015 season because they didn't think the timing was right due to weather and other factors.

The overcrowding of deer on the island is hurting the plant ecology, and there is a health concern with the spread of tick-borne illnesses like Lyme Disease.

The goal is to reduce the herd from 1,000 to 100-150 deer over the next four years.
