A Cape Cod teen was killed after a car race ended in a horrific crash.

State Police say 18-year-old Michael Lawrence of Osterville was racing his car on Route 6 just before 1:00 Sunday morning when he rolled his SUV and struck a tree on the side of the road, right between Exits 9 and 10 in Harwich.

Lawrence was pronounced dead at the scene. He was the only one in his car at the time of the crash, but troopers say he was racing his car against another teen, 18-year-old Adrian Sterling of Hyannis. Sterling was issued a criminal complaint and charged with reckless driving, speeding, and racing.

Officials are still investigating the circumstances of the crash but believe there was another vehicle in the area that was not related to the incident but may have witnessed it. Troopers are asking anyone who was traveling along that section of Route 6 at the time and who may have seen the two vehicles to call the South Yarmouth Barracks at 508-398-2323.

Lawrence was driving a 2002 black BMW X5 SUV, and Sterling was driving a 2000 white Toyota Camry Solara coupe.
