Accused drug dealer receiving food stamps arrested

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence police say they've arrested an alleged drug dealer accused of having $29,130 in cash in his apartment and cocaine valued about $140,000 while he collected food stamps.

Tthe Rhode Island Department of Human Services has been notified to review William Mendez's eligibility for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

Police say they began investigating Mendez last month after learning he allegedly was receiving drugs in the mail from Puerto Rico. Detectives arranged to have a shipment intercepted and delivered under surveillance.

Mendez is being held at the Adult Correctional Institutions on a charge of possession of cocaine and possession of cocaine with intent to deliver.

It was not known Tuesday if he is represented by a lawyer.
