PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Rhode Island officials say the state will receive $7 million in federal funding to improve emergency preparedness and recovery.

The state's congressional delegation and Gov. Lincoln Chafee said Sunday that the money is intended to help Rhode Island agencies and organizations prepare for, respond to and recover from regional and national emergencies, disasters, and mass-casualty events.

The funding also will help pay for improved training and to buy equipment.

Sen. Jack Reed cited Hurricane Sandy and last year's Boston Marathon bombing as emergencies that require preparation and equipment for first responders.
