Fifth-graders at Calcutt Middle School in Central Falls got a taste of the dangers of smoking Monday.

"Tar Wars" is a national anti-smoking program that's been teaching children about the negative impacts of smoking for 26 years.

Straws were handed out to the kids as pretend cigarettes.

The Director of the Rhode Island Department of Health, Dr. Michael Fine, quizzed students on the short and long term effects of smoking.

"They already know that tobacco is disgusting, deadly and expensive, and knowing that they are armed to go forward."

The students will take everything they learned to make anti-smoking posters that will be entered into the state and national contests.

Rhode Island has won the national contest twice in the last three years. Judging takes place May 10.
