FALL RIVER, MA- Nearly 20 years after a Fall River police officer was shot and killed, a community park is renamed in his honor.

Today, a new sign was unveiled by officer Thomas Giunta's family.

He was shot and killed on August 24, 1994, while giving out parking passes during Fall River's annual Holy Ghost Feast. He died at the age of 49 and has had a major impact on Fall River youth, including his son, who also became a police officer.

"These guys including myself put our lives on the line everyday and you don't want people to forget that," said Timothy Giunta.

Fall River Chief of police, Daniel Racine said, "This park at one time was a location where there was blight and crime and drugs, prostitution and that doesn't happen today."

The community park includes a playground for local kids.
