A long-time advocate for philanthropy, politics, and education in the state of Rhode Island has passed away.

Nuala Pell, grandmother of Clay Pell and widow of the late Senator Claiborne Pell, passed Sunday morning in Newport at the age of 89.

Mrs. Pell was recognized for her decades of service to Rhode Islanders. Last year, Salve Regina University announced the "Nuala Pell Leadership Program in Public Service" in honor of her dedication to the service of others.

Clay Pell says of his grandmother's passing, "Our entire family is heartbroken by my grandmother's passing. She dedicated her life to her family and to the service of others. From her work in support of the arts, education, and her humanitarian service, she was a beacon of hope to many. We could not have asked for a better parent or grandparent than Mimi. We will love and miss her more than words can express."

Providence Mayor Angel Taveras says in part, "Nuala Pell's contribution to the State of Rhode Island has been immeasurable." U.S. Senator Jack Reed recalls Mrs. Pell as "a civic leader in her own right...a spirited champion of the arts, education, and public service." Congressman Jim Langevin said Mrs. Pell "has always embodied those same values of selflessness, courage and kindness" as her late husband, Senator Claiborne Pell. U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse says her "remarkable lifetime of public service left an indelible mark on our state."
