The mother of the man who carried out a terrifying hoax at the finish line of the marathon Tuesday says her son suffers from mental illness. The security scare occurred just hours after the tribute to victims and survivors of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings.

Witness video taken Tuesday shows Kevin "Kayvon" Edson of Wakefield walking barefoot down Boylston Street in Boston while wearing all black. His face was covered with a veil and he yelling 'Boston Strong.'  Police arrested Edson. He was carrying a backpack and told officers there was a rice cooker inside.

The immediate area was evacuated and the bomb squad was called in. Investigators blew up the bag as a precaution. Edson was charged with being disorderly, disturbing the peace and possession of a hoax device. He was ordered held on $100,000 bail and sent to Bridgewater State Hospital for evaluation. He will return to court on May 7.

Edson appears in several YouTube videos. In one of those clips the self described performance artist talks about his "fashion style" calling himself  "... a mental patient, a blogger- bloggerist, a jail-bird, a college drop out and a drag queen." The video goes on to say Edson has bi-polar disorder.

Edson is also tied to an on-line site for 'Eco-Awareness' called 'Natural Selection'. On that blog are photos of the living Boston bombing suspect. One has a heart around his face. While Edson's name does not appear on that specific post he is listed as a founder on the site. Photos of the bombing suspect also appear on his personal FaceBook page.
