A decision by the Providence Superintendent of Schools to move Pre–K classes from Vartan Gregorian Elementary School to Asa Messer is not sitting well with some parents.

Several parents voiced their concerns at a School Board meeting on Wednesday night. There were about 50 people there, and the parents that did speak up got a bit emotional when talking about how this will effect their students.

"What we are saying is put the brakes on right now. We do not want them to go ahead with the transition meetings, we want them to stop, we want a seat at the table," said Hollybeth Runco the mother of a 3-year-old with special needs.

Superintendent, Susan Lusi, says moving Pre-K to Asa Messer gives the school district more options.

"I do think that the movement of the 3 Pre-K classrooms and also the opening of an additional classroom is the best way to serve the community," said Lusi.

The move will allow Vartan to add an extra kindergarten class, accommodating all those who want to get in.

Asa Messer will now have four Pre-K classes, up until now it had none.

One of the issues upsetting parents is no longer having a Pre-K in their zip code.

"Right now they're choosing 2 zip codes over the other 5 and that is not fair for all those children that are being bussed," said PTO President Kirstin DeShaw.

"You can see looking at the dots that the vast majority of children that we serve in the Pre-K those students with special needs are really clustered around schools where we have classrooms," said Lusi.

There was some talk from the parents that if this issue is not reconsidered they might look into hiring a lawyer.
