The University of Rhode Island's plan to arm campus police is drawing mixed reviews from students and faculty.

Some say it's a decision that's long overdue at the only public university in the country where campus police do not carry firearms. Others fear more guns on campus will mean more violence.

Jacob Wilson, a senior fisheries science major, says the decision makes sense and the weapons will be put in the right hands.

Senior Emily Cotter says students have been shot by campus police on other college campuses around the country, and she's concerned that could happen at URI.

The faculty union and senate have opposed the plan. The union's executive committee is meeting Monday to discuss its next steps.

Under the plan, police would be armed by next spring.
