Unlocking the dangers of an illegal garbage dump in Providence. For years people have tossed old beds in the lot at the corner of Cranston and Waldo Streets, car tires, TV sets, computers and other junk too. The most shocking discovery - hundreds of used and unused hypodermic needles. Neighbors are horrified.

"It attracts all kinds of animals and pestilence. It's just awful. It's unsanitary; it's a fire hazard; it's just something that's unbelievable," said Cranston Street neighbor Isaiah Thomas.

The Providence Rescue Mission is right across the street, and the people who live there led the volunteer clean up effort to help take back their neighborhood.

"There's syringes over in there. There's empty beer bottles. There's all sorts of nastiness even around the edges. We need to make it safe for kids to even walk up and down the street," said Sean Carew, who heads the Providence Rescue Mission.

And there are lots of kids in this neighborhood:

ABC6 Chief Political Reporter Mark Curtis said, "This pile of garbage grew to as tall as I am within 15 minutes and I'm six feet tall."

The City of Providence is looking to condemn the property, and seize it from the owner as a public nuisance.

"I do have the name of the owner and let me say that there are several tax liens on the property as we speak," said Ward 8 Councilman Wilbur Jennings.

Neighbors want the city to claim the land.
