A Burrillville man is being hailed a hero after risking his own life by running into a burning building Thursday night to save a total stranger.

“He actually thought I was breaking into his house to try and steal something– but I'm just happy I was there to be able to help him,” said Durand.

Durand and his friend had been out watching the Bruin’s game, but left before over time. When they pulled into his buddy’s driveway on Wallum Lake Road they saw the flames pouring out of a neighbor’s house. Durand knew they couldn't wait for the fire department.

“[I] took a step inside- started yelling- started screaming– trying to get someone's attention– see if there was anyone in there, and in the distance I could see somebody sit up,” said Durand.

Durand was able to get the Pascoag man, who was home alone, out of harms way.

The stubborn fire completely destroyed the garage and left the rest of the house in shambles. Firefighters say without Durand’s quick action things could have had a very different ending.

“I appreciate that, but without them the houses around there probably would have caught fire because it was really windy last night and the tree next door even caught on fire so– they can sing my praises. I'll sing there's. We can do that dance. That's fine with me,” said Durand.

The fire is believed to have started in the garage. The cause is under investigation.
