Tribute held for homeless man killed in Newport

Posted: Updated:
A tribute was held Friday night in Newport for a homeless man who was killed in a truck fire earlier this year.

Friends of 33–year–old Michael Bourque held a candlelight vigil. Bourque was trying to stay warm on a cold march night sleeping in an abandoned truck that caught fire.

Those at gathering also wanted to send a message to end homelessness .Organizers say Bourque's death last month should never have happened.

"There's solutions to homelessness that are viable and affordable and save money and are more humane and we believe they should be implemented here locally and across the state and really across the nation,” said Donald Boucher of Riverwood Mental Health Services.
