The driver who was shot after refusing to stop for police and pointing a gun at officers was a wanted fugitive from Virginia, according to police.

Just before 2:30 Saturday morning, two Cranston Police Officers tried to pull over a driver suspected of DUI on Plainfield Street. The driver refused to stop and drove into Providence. There, the driver got out of the car and pointed a gun at the officers. One officer shot at the suspect, causing a non-life threatening injury.

Providence Police Major David Lapatin says the suspect was 26-year-old Shawn Sykes, a wanted fugitive from Virginia. Police say he was carrying drugs and a gun at the time of the incident. Sykes was also wanted in Richmond, Virginia for commercial sex offenses.

In Providence, Sykes was out on bail for drug charges. He has an address in Pawtucket and has a lengthy criminal record in the state including robbery and drug possession.

Sykes was sent to Rhode Island Hospital and released to Providence Police, where he is being charged with felony assault, possession of cocaine, possession of a gun without a license, and possession of a firearm while committing a crime of violence.

Providence Police, Cranston Police, Rhode Island State Police, and the Attorney General’s Office are assisting in this investigation.
