Rhode Island Congressman David Cicilline is back from a trip to Ukraine.

Cicilline, who is a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, was part of a bipartisan congressional delegation making the trip.

“The purpose was to see what’s going on, on the ground, but also demonstrate American support for the Ukraine,” said Cicilline.

Tensions remain high in the country as pro-Russian supporters continue to protest outside administrative buildings in the eastern part of Ukraine.  Last month, Russia and President Putin annexed the Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula.

“What I was really struck by was the determination and the grit and the commitment of the Ukrainian people.  Wherever we went they expressed their intentions to keep their country unified and to resist the Russian aggression,” said Cicilline.

The trip comes as the U.S. prepares to impose more sanctions on Russia.

“President Putin is not a stupid man and I think recently acknowledged this has already had an impact,” said President Obama.

New sanctions could come as early as Monday.
