Hundreds of miles away from the destruction paths left behind by the Tornadoes in the South and Midwest a Rhode Island company is giving people peace of mind. Echo Messaging Systems, Inc. has created the first ever app that can find someone following a twister.

From their Lincoln office Tammy Fuller and Gerald Deane monitor tornado activity. The screen lights up when people are using their app.

"If there is a need, if they are in trouble
you are going to know where they are," said Fuller.

Fuller, and an outofstate cousin named Kim, developed the "Find Me Tornado Safety App" after seeing stories of people afraid to take cover during a twister because they were afraid of not being found. The servers are kept far from the disaster. That means that the app will continue to communicate information even if cell towers go down.

"It gives them that one step above everybody else to say okay the towers goes down, I have no way of contacting anybody, but now I do," said Deane who is the President and CEO of the software company.

Here's how it works:When a user is taking shelter they would launch the app. An alert message with the persons GPS coordinates would then be sent out to their pre

programmed emergency contacts. If the user doesn't respond to the app after 15 minutes the program emails, texts and calls those people. First responders would also be alerted.

"They would actually look and see who needs help because a little bubble will come up and say 'I need help. I'm in my bunker or I'm trapped underneath,'" said Deane.

Fuller has relatives who live in tornado alley, and knows first hand the helplessness of waiting to find out if loved ones are okay. She hopes the app gives them peace of mind.

More than 500 people have already downloaded it. There is a one time $2.99 fee to install the app.
