Clay Pell Loans Campaign Another $1 Million

Democratic candidate for Governor Clay Pell was shaking hands and talking education policy in East Providence. This, the very day the latest campaign finance reports are out. Pell has just lent his campaign for Governor another one million dollars.

"Certainly in terms of my time, in terms of my effort and whatever resources I have, I am committed to making sure that we are able to run a very competitive campaign," Pell said.

Pell has now donated two–point–one million dollars to his own campaign. By comparison outside donors account for just $170 thousand in the last quarter.

ABC6 Chief Political Reporter Mark Curtis said, "Rhode Island does have a history of some candidates successfully self–funding their own campaigns. Governors Lincoln Chafee and Bruce Sundlun come to mind."

Political analysts caution that some voters might view this as a wealthy candidate trying to buy the office:

"There's a certain segment of the public that will see this as eroding the democratic process. I mean the ides of a democracy is that anybody can run for public office, and particularly during a time of recession," said Rhode Island College Political Communication Professor Valerie Endress.

Meanwhile, Pell has not put a limit on how much of his family fortune he might spend on the Governor's race.

"I am committed to bringing the resources to bear to run a competitive race," Pell said.

But Pell says he won't take donations from political action committees or state house lobbyists.
