Convicted felon John Cicilline, the brother of Congressman David Cicilline will be readmitted to the Rhode Island bar.

Cicilline a well known Providence attorney was disbarred after he pleaded guilty to four felony charges including conspiracy, making false statements, and obstruction of justice in 2008. Cicilline then served 18 months in federal prison. Recently he applied to be readmitted to the bar. After reviewing his case the Rhode Island Supreme Court agreed to readmit him as long as his practice was supervised for the first two years. Former House Speaker Bill Murphy will be supervising his practice.

The decision said that Cicilline’s convictions, “arose from a misguided attempt to assist a client in receiving favorable treatment by federal authorities when that client was facing a lengthy term of imprisonment.”

The court also referenced the outpouring of support Cicilline recieved in form of letters from 81 individuals including active members of the bar, prosecutors and a former Attorney General. They also noted that they believe Cicilline is remorseful for his crimes.

Cicilline was released from prison in 2009. He then briefly opened a downtown sandwich shop called Federal Wrap.
