Two weeks to the day before the Central Coventry Fire District was set to shut down, Governor Chafee signed a big to keep it open.

"I see this as kind of a resurrection because this allows that budget commission who has so much knowledge in finances to really roll up their sleeves see what needs to be done and implement it,” said Union President of the Coventry Fire Dept. Captain David Gorman.

The bankrupt fire department has been in receivership since October of 2012. Since that time the district which covers 20,000 people has gone from five stations to two.

Governor Chafee said in a statement that under state leadership the Fire District will have to pay off its financial obligations... that plan will likely include increased taxes, union concessions and possibly reduced services.

There will be a transition into the state leadership, the Gorman tells ABC 6 News that the department will likely learn more about the process next week.
