Fitchburg, MA- Among those in attendance, were those who led search efforts for 5-year-old Jeremiah Oliver who was last seen in September but wasn't reported missing until December.

Looking at his 5–year-old's tiny white coffin, Jose Oliver tearfully apologizes to his son for not doing more to keep him safe.

Jeremiah's body was discovered off a highway in Sterling last month.

Children not much older than the boy himself sang songs of comfort and his older brother gave a eulogy.

"I think this is really something that's affected all of us. Not many of us knew Jeremiah but we felt like we knew him and we all feel like we're responsible for raising our children as communities," said Fitchburg Mayor, Lisa Wong.

Fitchburg police chief, Robert DeMoura said, "This was the case we needed to complete because this meant so much to the community at large."

Jeremiah was the victim of violence. His mother and her boyfriend are in jail on kidnapping and assault and battery charges. A tip from an inmate led police to his body.

The Department of Children and Families commissioner, Olga Roche resigned following the deaths of three children in the system, including Jeremiah.
