The Rhode Island Bridge and Turnpike Authority voted this morning to delay toll increases on the Newport Pell Bridge and Sakonnet River Bridge.

The tolls were scheduled to increase on May 16. On the Sakonnet River Bridge the toll would increase from ten cents to fifty cents for E-ZPass users and $3.75  for non E-ZPass users. The Newport Bridge would increase from $.83 for E-ZPass users to $1.04.

The increase has been delayed until June 12 to give state lawmakers a chance to make decisions on the future of Aquidneck Island’s bridges.

On Tuesday, the Senate Finance Committee voted a bill that would eliminate tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge out of committee.
