As part of a deal between Fall River’s Mayor Will Flanagan and the local firefighters union, 25 firefighters will be laid off.

The agreement was reached Thursday night. Initially, the mayor proposed cutting the number of firefighters from 200 to 153 but firefighters argued that was unsafe. The cuts are a result of the SAFER grant money which will run out in June. As a result of the grant, staffing levels in the department were increased from 153 to 200.

The union and mayor agreed that the department will be reduced to 175 with the goal of bringing it back to 200 over the next couple of years.
