The totals are in, and local postal carriers collected 85,000 pounds of food at this year’s “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive.

It’s the largest one-day food drive in the U.S.

Postal workers fanned out Saturday, collecting non-perishable food left at mailboxes that will go to local food pantries.

Organizers say they’ve recently seen a sharp decline in the amount of food being donated, while the amount of people needing it has gone up.

Andrew Schiff, CEO of the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, says, “We're actually seeing a record number of people still in need of food assistance, serving 68,000 people each month.”

Last year, volunteers collected 13,000 more pounds of food. And 5 years ago, 65,000 more pounds.
