The New Hampshire community of Brentwood is grieving the loss of a police officer and father who was killed in the line of duty. Steven Arkell was shot and killed at a Mill Pond Road home. The home was then set on fire and exploded.

Officer Arkell was responding to a domestic disturbance at the residence where a man and his father lived. He was shot upon entering the duplex. A short time later flames could be seen pouring out of the home. Then, there was a massive explosion. The blast was so powerful it ripped off the roof of the building.

The Attorney General's Office had identified the suspected shooter as Michael Nolan, 47. They believe he died in the blaze.

Neighbors in the suburban 55+ community are in shock. Many of them were evacuated during the gunfire and the blast.

"All these cops came and the swat team and people there walking around the house with machine guns– it was just scary, scary, scary," said neighbor Susan Hughes.

"We felt an explosion and we looked at each other and said we gotta get out of here," said witness Chandler Brissette.

"Not only did we hear it, we saw it simultaneously. Very frightening," said neighbor Pat Withka.

Neighbors describe the elder Nolan as being in his 80's, friendly, and outgoing. As for the suspected shooter, they say he tended to stay in doors.

In addressing the community last night New Hampshire's governor called the officer, who put his life on the line, a hero.

"I join all granite staters in mourning the loss of Brentwood Police Officer Steve Arkell who died tonight doing his job protecting his community," said Gov. Maggie Hassan.

Arkell leaves behind a wife and two daughters. The governor has ordered flags be flown at half staff in his honor.
