WARREN, RI- She can still run and play, but a 16–month–old Shepherd mix, named Gemma has an exit wound after being shot in the head.

"Jaxon came in and grabbed us and said Gemm's scared, I need to clean Gemma. And he grabbed the mop and we found her with a bullet wound in her head; shot her between her eyes," said owner, Jonathan Goss.

Gemma walked home after being shot somewhere near her home last Tuesday, on Barton Avenue in Warren.

It appears she was shot at close range.

Police are investigating and the Rhode Island SPCA is offering a $750 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction of the shooter.

Dr. EJ Finocchio with the RISPCA said, "To shoot a defenseless animal, for what reason would you do this. There has to be a motive other than the fact that there are people out there that are just plain cruel and get their kicks out of doing these things."

Goss adds, "She may lose an eye, but she's a fighter so we'll see."

A GoFundMe project has been set up to help Gemma's family pay for vet costs. Family friends say Gemma is recovering well.
