This time next year Newport will be jam–packed with visitors for the Volvo Ocean Race, but finding a place to stay may be hard to come by. Most of the cities 3,000 hotel rooms are already booked for the two week event.

"We have 208 guest rooms– and they're all committed right now," said Marlen Scalvi of the Hotel Viking when talking about May 14–17, 2015.

Well ahead of their arrival the Hotel Viking preparing for guests from around the world. The international sailing competition will make it's only U.S. stop in Newport next May. For two weeks the city will be jam packed with the teams, crews, sponsors, and of course the fans.

"We haven't had anything in a while to equal this," said Scalvi.

Even with the race still a ways away there are already visible signs that it's coming. One of the teams competing, the SAC all female crew, arrived in Newport this week to test the waters and familiarize themselves with the area.

Discover Newport says the impact of the Volvo Ocean Race is expected to extend well beyond the 'City by the Sea.'

"There are a lot of hotels already booked for providence for this event– and I think that we're going to sell out a lot of hotel rooms throughout the state," said the Evan Smith, the organizations CEO.

Discover Newport anticipates the race will translate into tens of millions of dollars for the area.

That would include visitor spending for dining, recreation, transportation and corporate events, and lodging.

"I think the year anniversary is sending a strong signal to everybody that something really good in 2015," said Smith.

The race will officially kick off this fall.
