The Providence school district has named its teacher of the year. A surprise assembly was held at pleasant view elementary today to make the big announcement. Everyone thought the ceremony was to congratulate the students on their testing achievement, but that was just a cover.

The Providence Schools 2014 teacher of the year was completely taken aback when her name was called. Surrounded by her second grade class Claudia Jackvony of Pleasant View Elementary School was honored with the title.

"It's absolutely overwhelming. Just unbelievable," said Jackvony.

Years of hard work and dedication all made worth it with a group hug from her young students.

"I wanted to teach in Providence because I want these kids to have the possibilities that all kids have and I want to give them a vision for the future– tap into their passion," said Jackvony, a 26 year veteran in the district.

Mrs. Jackvony's teaching and classroom style came highly recommended by students, parents, and her peers.

"She's an innovator. She improves day after day, week after week, year after year, to do what's best for kids and we are so proud," said Gara Field, Principal at Pleasant View Elementary.

The superintendent says a teacher of the year candidate has to make lasting impressions on their students and that Mrs. Jackvony fits that description to a tee.

"Parents wrote in that their kids didn't want to miss a single day of school in Mrs. Jackvony's classroom. You can't ask for more than that," said Dr. Susan Lusi, Superintendent of Providence Public Schools.

Mrs. Jackvony says her biggest goal in the classroom is to provide the spark her students need for the future. Her new role as teacher of the year will no doubt inspire them in a way like no other.

She will now go on to represent the district in the statewide selection of teacher of the year.
